Just further proof what thieving criminals the auto industry is. The pinion seal on the rear diff of my 2020 F150 is just starting to get damp. So I booked appointment to have it done at dealer because I remembered I still have extended warranty. So gunna be two weeks before they get me in, so I stopped in today to get 2 litres of gear oil to carry with me in case I need to top up of it gets worse. I went to dealer because I didn't know off hand what type of oil for those locking rear diffs. Turns out it is the same 75W-140 I just got for the Rockwell rear axle in my L9000.
Two litres....$105!!!!!! For comparison I got two pails to change out my L9000's Rockwell from my heavy truck parts supplier for $145 each. That's 20 litres per pail.
So by Ford dealer math that pail is worth $1000 and it would have cost me $2000 to do my big truck. That is downright criminal. No doubt I'll be returning those now that I saw it's the same oil I have at home for the big truck.
I wouldn’t defend that even if a Ford dealership’s overhead is much higher. You are helping them pay the bills when cars aren’t selling. Do it if you wish. That wouldn’t have been my first stop.
That being said, it seems that Phillips 66 makes Motorcraft 75w-140 gear oil. No need to make a charitable, though non-tax deductible, donation to Ford just for the logo on the label if you don’t feel like doing so.
I'm not going to defend the dealers but, if they were a sole source supplier of said needed item and the price was that bad, then I'd say they are price gouging. There are far too many reasonable options to acquire lubricants that there's no reason why one should return to the dealer unless the dealer is doing the work.
price gouging ? wife and i went yesterday to try and order a loaded mustang dark horse premium from what used to be our long time go to dealer ,first it was NO longer owned by the same family we dealt with for 50 years,it was now a bigger name highway dealer i had worked for decades back and quit from.
car had a $83.000.00 MSRP, they wanted to add 15k as a dealer availability surcharge , we got up and walked out ,
