hello! just picked up this bad boy today for 1500. I have two immediate issues i'd like to tackle on it, and whatever other suggestions you guys would have for mods, etc.
first issue: at low rpms, regardless of speed, i get a light and constant shudder. If i turn overdrive off, it immediately goes smooth. i'd like to figure this out because this is a gas hog, and the oil market is looking to hit new all time highs. my hunch is fuel delivery.
second issue: i'm driving over and down a steep mountain pass twice a day, uphill, i need to manually switch into 1st and 2nd gear to get up. If i just leave the ignition in drive, it will stay in 3rd or 4th. would like to solve that if possible.
I'm not a mechanic, but I have enough tools and patience to get myself in and out of trouble as need be. I would appreciate whatever advice you guys have to offer!
As far as mods go, i'd like to convert to LEDs, and deck out the inside for camping expeditions. so far i've already gutted the whole inside to save weight
Not an expert here but seems more like transmission related based on your description. ATF fluid may need to be flushed and replaced? How about a full engine tune up? It's surprisingly effective. Beyond that I'd also look into replacing/cleaning your IAC valve, and replace your fuel pressure regulator, a bottle of Royal Purple Fuel system cleaner (2 applications not all at once). You're van is 27 years old so it needs all of them eventually. I'm already doing that with my 38 year old van.
If you are switching to LED headlights, make sure you get something reputable. I spent hours researching and ended up going with the Phillips sealed replacements and couldn't be happier. There are a few better brands, but at $500, I want ready to spend that. When I got they Phillips, I think they were $110 each.
For the shudder with overdrive on, you might want to check things like the torque converter, transmission fluid condition, or even ignition/fuel delivery related items first. A lot of older trucks can develop that kind of behavior under low RPM load.
As for the mountain driving issue, some transmissions just tend to hunt for higher gears too early, especially uphill. Could be worth checking throttle cable adjustment / transmission controls depending on the year and setup.
And for the camping + LED plans, sounds like a fun build honestly. Since you mentioned converting to LEDs, feel free to check out AUXITO as well — we have a pretty wide range of lighting options, so there may be something that fits your setup. You can usually find our products on auxito.com, Amazon, or eBay.
