'63 F-100 4x4: Rebuild 292 Y block or?

Hello all,

Forum newby here. I bought this '63 F-100 as a project. It's rough, but original and most all of the parts are there. The 292 runs, but with a knock and serious oil leak from the rear main seal. Engine originality and mileage are unknown, and it's missing the flywheel dust cover. The 4 speed gearbox needs some work too.

Has anyone recently had a Y block rebuilt, or installed a crate engine in one of these trucks? If I opt for the crate engine, I would also replace the 4 speed with a Tremec 5 speed. Anyone have experience doing that?

Thanks, John

You can go either way. If you go away from the 292 and 4 speed to most any other more modern engine it won't allow the front motor mount to be used, and you'd have to change to side mounts and then instead of the rear bellhousing mount you'd eliminate that crossmember and put the support underneath the transmission. Should be fine but if you don't want to get involved in moving the transfer case and having all new front and rear driveshafts and the coupling shaft modified or custom made due to that move you'd need to have an engine/trans combo that fits with enough room to have a coupling shaft or CV joint between the transmission and transfer case. Also, if you move the transfer case, you'd have to think about lengthening the shift rod for it. Or maybe you could find a transmission with a married transfer case and eliminate the Dana 24 from the mix, too. Variety of ways to go and things to think about.

Thanks for your reply.

Looking at a 302 crate motor with the Tremec 5 speed, if it'll fit without having to move the transfer case. If it won't, then will go with rebuilding the 292 and the 4 speed box.

Disregard. I was thinking the AX15 but it's not as short as I was recalling.

I put a 460 in mine, wish I had the original 292. I'd rebuild the original, do some upgrades for more power with the money you save from crate motor.

Thanks for your input wwhite. The 292 rebuild and reinstall is definitely easier and saves a lot of $ over buying a crate engine and getting it in the truck.

Great looking truck!! Congrats!!

Having been in the same spot with my 63 F250 4x yrs ago, I kick myself for selling the 292, I should've just rebuilt the 292, so I would go for the rebuilding of the 292. Currently my 63 F250 4x is awaiting me having time to dedicate to fabing mounts for the 351C/NP435 I'm going to put in it, keeping the original 292 would have had me driving it a long time ago. I got frustrated since it kept bending pushrods, and at the time I figured a swap would be easier, little did I know...

When I did mine I thought about a newer style motor but only for about 30 seconds. 292 it was. No photo description available.

Appreciate that Pickupman, I'm leaning in the rebuild direction. Hope you get yours done soon.

That's a great looking motor and compartment. Is it built with stock components, or did you put some performance parts in? I like the exhaust manifolds and lack of cross pipe. A really clean look. Source?

I have the original oil bath air cleaner to install if I rebuild the 292.

It has some performance parts in it. The exhaust manifolds as well as cam pistons and billet timing gears and chain came from Mummert. If you rebuild the 292 and decide to go with a 4 BBL carb, do not put a 600 CFM carb on it. I just went to a 390 CFM carb from a 600 and the all around performance of the engine is way better with the smaller carb! IMO
