57 y-block 292 location for temp sending unit

I'm looking to mount a coolant temperature sending unit in my 57 y-block 292 engine. I understand that the head or intake manifold are preferred locations, and that any coolant ports on lower block are poor choices due to insufficient flow. My intake manifold does not offer any ports other than to the heater hose. The only pipe port that I found on heads exists at rear of drivers side, and is very close to intake manifold mounting. I'm waiting for parts to check fit, but am I correct that this is the ideal location? Also, this is a 1/4NPT plug (into a 1/2NPT bushing). I won't know pipe size of temperature sending until I receive it. But I suppose I could replace existing reducing bushing with a different one.

That's where they originally were installed

i put a mechanical gage sender in the location you show in the image. this is also where the stock electric sender is located.

i have seen some install a sender on the water pump, there's a large hex plug on the lower hose outlet ( this is also a place where a power steering bracket mounts).....

I think I'm liking that water pump installation location. It's a 3/8NPT, which I think the temperature sending unit might end up being. I'll just have to improve the ground connection by removing some bolts and wiping away paint. I'm also worried that the head reducing bushing might not be a reducing bushing. It might be a pressfit with 1/4NPT port. I'm finding different info online. Thanks for your help.

The best location (IMO) of the FYB coolant temp switch is directly behind or @ the thermostat in the intake front coolant cross-over runner.

Where FORD located the OEM switch measured only cyl block water jacket temp on the left bank. The coolant then went through the left cyl head to intake manifold front coolant crossover with no coolant temp readings on the right cyl block bank or head.

The sensor bulb must extend downwards enough to stay emerged in coolant.

I see what you mean about intake manifold coolant crossover runner being a good choice for temp sending unit. I've got a heater shutoff valve in that port, though, and I don't see an alternative location for the heater fitting. And installing a tee there for both would not keep the sending unit immersed, not to mention there'd be no flow if valve is closed in summer. Any ideas for alternate heater valve location, without drilling and tapping new port?

Not without a new port alongside the heater hose outlet (thicker casting area) (spaced back from the thermostat position). Don' want to get into a fight with the thermostat opening.

You can always stay with where FORD put it.
