Oil Change Dilemma — Filter leaking
Still not sure what’s up — but has to be the oring. It looked seated fine before install….
Anyone know how many quarts are behind just the filter if I only remove it? Ideally wouldn’t drain the whole pan again, but if multiple quarts of oil await me behind the filter, and it’s going to be a massive mess, maybe I just start the whole process over. Sucks.
I don't know how much oil is behind the filter. If it were me, I'd do this:
1. Get a full oil change worth of additional oil and a new filter
2. Drop the filter
3. Fix whatever is going on there
4. Oil the gasket and install the new filter, or the same old-new filter that is now fixed
5. Refill oil until "full" on the dipstick
6. Start engine, let run for 60 seconds, shut off
7. Let it sit a couple of minutes
8. Check oil level again and top off if needed to get to "full" on the dipstick
9. Drive gently around the block
10. Confirm oil level is where you left it, top off if needed
11. Save leftover new-new oil for next oil change
12. Tell us how much it took so we can answer this question for the next member that asks
