2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin carry capacity

Hello,

I have a 2009 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Adrenalin and I was looking at getting a slide in camper for it. My yellow sticker says the combined weight or occupants and cargo should not exceed 1156 lbs.
This seems kind of low but I may go with a 475lb unit and keep the addons to a minimal if necessary.

Anyone know if this limit is low as it says I can pull 7200 lb trailer.

Cheers,

Richard

The load on the brakes and suspension hauling cargo is different than when towing. Heavier trailers, if legally compliant, will have trailer brakes to help with that aspect. I think it's any trailer rated for over 3500 lbs will have trailer brakes. The tongue weight rating for towing will also be significantly lower than the trailer towing capacity. A bit over half a ton cargo capacity is actually higher than I would have expected for a non-half ton truck.

I think you will be overall happier going with the 475 lb unit, especially if you anticipate hauling it through hilly areas or areas that could experience side wind when hauling it. You may also want to budget for some air ride helper springs in the near future as well.

I used to have a 2004 Aviator that I tried pulling a 17 foot travel trailer with. The travel trailer was on the heavier side of short travel trailers (a bit under 5000 lbs if I recall correctly) since it had a slideout, but it only took one breezy day when towing it and the family home from a camping weekend to shop for a truck better equipped for towing. I really liked that Aviator too and was sad to trade it in.

Thanks Rod,

I was looking at a trailer, even bolers and watched people pulling them and decided that either going camper or camper van were the options. Most campervans are poorly put together so camper wins.
I am currently trying to load it out to be under 800lbs.

I want to travel to Yukon and Alaska with it so truck is the best option and go light.

Thanks for your insight,

Cheers,

Richard

I hope someday to make it to Alaska to visit. It sounds like a wonderful road trip so do as much as you can to make the experience pleasant (ie; keep it light!) and as stress-free as possible.

Personally I would rather be pulling a Boler (fiberglass shell), than a camper in the bed.. I have done both..

I am also looking at a 2025 Skinny Guy ARMOR 17 LTX, seems well built

I was looking at how the camper would sit and I don't like that 1/2 the weight would be on the rear and behind the rear tires. I don't want the weight to lift my front end.
