2020 max XLT frustrations
I bought it used in January of 2024 with just shy of 50,000 miles. In August of 2025, it now has 80,000 miles on the clock.
so far I’ve had to replace the rear AC evaporator, rear differential, spark plugs and one coil. Currently fighting a misfire when towing indicating another coil is on its way out. Also fighting a bad pull to the left under heavy braking. I replaced the right front brake hose as an attempt to fix the pull, but it did not solve it. So there is something in the suspension going out causing the pull.
also, during my last oil change, I see there is a heavy wet line coming out of the pinion seal to the front differential. Wasn’t there at the last oil change.
at this point I am extremely glad I bought the extended warranty. It covered the AC and rear differential ($5600!) and I think it will cover the suspension and front pinion seal.
but I’m extremely disappointed that a vehicle with 80,0000 miles has a longer repair list than my 2014 had at 175,000.
it’s turning into my 2006 expedition which ran on steady infusions of greenbacks. As long as you kept feeding it, the thing would keep going. I said then that if the 2006 expedition had been my first ford, it would have been my last. And I’m starting to feel the same way about the 2020. So far it has been an extremely expensive vehicle to own.
I usually don’t leave much meat on the bone when I’m done with a vehicle, but I may have to sell this one when my extended warranty is up at 135,000. I’ve NEVER sold one that I early, but it this thing hasn’t instilled the level of trust needed to keep it beyond some financial assistance with the repairs.
sorry for the rant.
just not feeling it today. It not all rainbows and unicorns
So I stopped in a safe location along the way and changed the #3 coil.
resumed the journey home and started getting really light misfires that progressively got worse. Finally got to the point about 10 miles from home that I had to unhook, leave the camper in an abandoned lot and go home to get a different vehicle to bring the camper home.
so … possibly a bad coil out of the box. Possibly a plug going bad after only 20,000 miles. Or possibly something worse.
so far I’ve swapped the #1 and #3 coil and bought another new coil. The plan is to hook up the horse trailer and drive it around long enough to get it hot and see if it will misfire under load. It probably won’t do it without towing something heavy, so that’s the plan. If the misfire follows the coil, I have the solution for it. If it stays on #3 it is going to screw me up this weekend as we are heading out on a 6 hour trip away from other people.
also noticed that, according to the freeze frame data, when the code set the engine was running almost 220 degrees. Gauge doesn’t move of course, but both the engine and trans run pretty hot when towing.
