Hey all, just got a 03 SD 5.4 220k on the cheap . It has a loud tic at all rpms from passenger cover. Pulled rollers and lash adjusters. Pumped lash with mighty vac and they are solid. Can pull up slightly then down same amount but no farther.
rollers look good with no up down play but all have slight side to side play.
I changed plugs coils and oil before I started.
Before I throw parts at this can I get some suggestion.

Any chance the tic you are hearing is actually a cracked manifold &/or broken stud?
Exhaust leaks are very common on the passenger side of both 2v & 3v 5.4L & usually present as a ticking sound.
That being said, at 220k I would still suspect a few of the lash tensioners &/or rollers since these are VERY common to wear out.
Hmmmm
there is a crack on the lower side of the passenger exhaust manifold. I have a v10 with an exhaust leak sounds nothing like this. Instead of $ on valve train parts, button it up and work the manifold?
Alright.
thanks for the input. I do appreciate. More heads are better than one.
i have MELLING lifters and rollers coming. I’ll button it up and see from there. Those manifold bolts are Rusted!
Mine does it on startup for appx a minor so, annoying but glad it goes away, waiting on the day it doesn't, then it'll be rplc the studs time.. 00 Ex 5.4 w/150k now
