Last year for mechanical brakes on a US Ford is '38. In '39 they went to hydraulic brakes. An oval grille, like a barrell shape, would be a '38. A '38 has a chrome V8 emblem towards the top the grille.

The lever/rod on hte side of the shifter is a detent. Pull it up to allow shifting into reverse, should be away from you and towards the seat. Hope this helps.

It's been a while since I've messed with a flathead (I'm assuming you have a flathead V8). All of the v8's before '49 had two peice guides where the valve had a built-on keeper on the end. In order to get these out (if I remember right) you need to get all the pressure off the spring that you can to pull the retainer for the spring out (the Craftsman spring compressor worked for me for this). Then I used a special pry bar to pry the guides down so I could pull the valve guide retainers out. Then the guide and valve are supposed to come out the top of the block. Easier said than done.

I broke the bottoms off of some of my guides trying to get their retainers off, and then had to rip half to the guides out (If not hammering them down into the valley). Can be a really fun job.

Good luck! And there may be others with better ways of doing this too.
