1985 Ford 6.9 IDI Truck - Potential Issues Beyond Glow Plugs?
I'm interested in a 1985 Ford 6.9 IDI non-turbo truck. The seller has listed the following issues, and I’m wondering if there could be any underlying problems beyond the glow plugs that they mentioned:
"Hard to warm up in cold weather."
"If I need the glow plugs to start, I have to cycle the key several times; otherwise, they struggle to warm up."
"Feels sluggish and underpowered at higher speeds." The seller drives it around 50 mph on the highway due to its sluggishness. They suspect it might be the glow plugs but aren’t sure.
When I asked if the engine might be bad, the seller responded, "I doubt it's the motor. Everything seems fine with the oil, coolant, and compression. I drive it regularly."
Could there be any other issues to look out for? Thanks in advance for any insight
glow plugs are for cold start only, and have no effect on the engine once warmed up.
it will not cold start because either the glow plugs are bad, the controller is bad, or a combination of both.
as for sluggish, the 6.9 was never a racecar engine. at 170 HP it was made to pull anything anywhere you want it to go, just not fast.
