Anyone else deal with a stubborn fuel filter that wont come off? As I was chiseling it out I nicked the machined flat surface at the top of the fuel bowl. I didnt grab a picture of it...I can if I have to. Anyways, has anyone else done that before? If so, will it leak? I let it run and it didn't leak but I haven't driven it yet. I have a 1800 mile trip coming up in about a month so I want to make sure it is taken care of before that trip.
You already reassembled it but I would have dressed it slightly with a fine file, lubed the gasket and put it back together.
Like stated you got a month, besides the pressure in the bowl doesn't change much while driving, so if it was going to leak it would most likely be doing it now.
If it leaks.. Pull it off and use a flat platten or piece of glass w/ some fine sandpaper glued to it and lightly machine it flat again. Go slow, and check often. Rotate it in your hands often so you keep it square.
I love the custom pin wrench that appeared in the opening thumbnail for your video. I also noticed the rounded hex on the Wix filter cap. I can just imagine all the cussing that was going on at each failed attempt to remove that cap.
Just how many ugga duggas did you tighten that cap to previously?
As for the nicked sealing surface, you're probably okay if it isn't squirting fuel after a few weeks of driving.
Now I have to start driving it. I leave at the end of the month. 1800 miles, very remote areas through eastern OR, Central NV and eventually down the remote part of CA. I think the longest part without a parts store in 200 miles so I will have my tools with me, spare fuel filter, oil, etc.
The trip will be at 19.5 gross and then towards the end I pick up a trailer and am around 26-27k gross.
I have an untested VGT turbonator, new rotors and pads all the way around (I dont trust new parts since covid, the simplest of parts fail in odd ball ways now) and a suspect fuel bowl....wish me luck
Depends where the nick is, on the flat where the oring seals, or on the outer raised edge.
FWIW I dislike the aftermarket one piece filter and caps, (ok I actually dont like the fuel bowl lol ).
With note to the video, where he opens the bowl drain after he fought with the filter lid, I find the lid comes off easier if the bowl drain is opened and bowl drained before trying to loosen the lid.
I should have gotten a picture, part of me says leave it be, but now that I posted here I feel I have to post pictures. I will take the cap off today and get a picture.
Not sure of where your headed but have some pretty good ideas after being in Truckee for almost 30 years. Based on you rough posted route you may not be to far from Fallon at some point, if so and you have issues reach out.
Thank you! I appreciate it @truckeemtnfords I am going down the 95 between Boise and Winnemucca, then down I80 past lovelock. back on the 95 through fallon, walker lake, hawthorne and then bishop and down the 395.
