My 15 year old son is looking at possibly buying an '89 Bronco II that will come with a 4.0 and 5spd from a 2000 Ranger. The guy has the 4.0 in the Bronco but no wiring has been touched. I was wondering if someone has a good link on what is required for this swap. I've done some searching and it seems the '89+ are the easier years to do this swap with, but everything I've seen was using a pre-96 4.0 engine and harness. A 2000 would be OBDII. How would that work out. I'm assuming you would need the 2000 ECU and a lot of wiring changes, or fit a pre-96 engine harness on the 2000 engine.
I'm not too concerned with a fair amount of wiring as I've done the Mustang EFI on my first gen. I'm more concerned with not getting all the right parts and costing my son too much.
Wow, I didn't think anyone was here. Not much to report now. Mostly he's been cleaning inside and out. It's going to be slow progress as I still have things to fix on my Bronco.
Not much traffic here. I look here every once in a while. I ended up having the 2.9L rebuilt a few years ago and then the A4LD about a year later in my ‘89.
Finding a 2.9L would certainly be the easiest and quickest way to get it back on the road, but I think the 4.0L is overall a better engine. The next easiest would be to find an EEC-IV harness and ECU from something like a 94 Explorer, and this will be a backup option if for some reason we can't get the '00 EEC-V harness and ECU wired up correctly. Having the OBD-II controls and ability to connect it to my OBD phone app will be nice. So that is the current plan.
The 4.0L engine would have been better but I don’t have anywhere to swap an engine. Since I was paying for it to be done the 2.9L swap didn’t require any extra work to require the harness. I don’t need OBD-II so and definitely don’t need my phone to talk to my vehicle.
