1996 300 and 1979 300 - same block?

I have a 1979 300 complete motor with only 8k miles since a full rebuild. I am looking at a 1996 F150 with a 300 in it. The 96 motor may be shot. I am wondering if I could pull both motors and essentially swap all 96 full injection etc over and use my low mileage 300.
Thank you for your input!

You'll be about 1/2 point down in compression, with no knock sensor. Try to find an EFI - '87 up.

Very good advice! I had to look up what a "knock sensor" does! I will look for an '87up block as you suggest!
