Does anyone know of a good glass shop in the SE Michigan area that has experience with, and is willing to install the old school style windshields and seals? It's a '73 F-250 and it has the wide chrome trim which apparently makes things more difficult. Most of the shops I talked to either don't have any one who knows how to work with these older style seals or they're just afraid to try. The cab is coming back from the body shop tomorrow and I would like to get the glass in while the cab is still off the frame. Any referrals would be appreciated.
only suggestion I would have is to find a hot rod shop some where in the area and chat with them. I think there was a Place in Taylor called Hot Rod Solutions.
Thanks. I'm going to go chat with Detroit Hot Rod in Plymouth later this afternoon. We'll see what they say. One of the Safelite locations said they would try if I signed a waiver but didn't want to mess with the trim. I'm not going to go without the trim. Wouldn't look right at all. My last resort will be doing it myself, but that's a very last resort. I don't have anyone to help me who knows what they're doing so I foresee that being a nightmare.
Yeah, it is definitely easier with more hands also. I have done rear glass by myself with the rubber molding, but a windshield is much larger. Good luck!
DHR said they have “a guy”. He’s up in Troy and comes down to their shop to do the old school stuff when they need it. Hopefully he’ll be willing to help me out.
That’s the guy. Looks like I’m going to have to tow the truck up there with no windshield though since it doesn’t seem like they’re willing to make remote visits. Oh well. No big deal.

Ahh...Mike is probably handing the old stuff. Doesn't get out on the road much anymore. His son is spearheading most of the remote stuff now, but i think what they do is just go to various shops, like us, not home visits, and do several windshields at once.
They do excellent work and struggle to keep up as it is.
Yeah, Mike was the name that DHR gave to me. I’m hoping that maybe I can throw them some cash for the trouble and Mike can do the work at their shop so I only have to go 2 miles instead of 40. I’ll drive it two miles with no windshield, but not 40 with all of the gravel on our awful roads. Great way to lose an eye or worse.
Talked to Mike yesterday.
He had no problem going out to DHR, sounded like he's out there somewhat regularly anyway. More a matter of coordinating with DHR then him it seemed.
Follow up on this… It took about two months of waiting (dude is super busy and I think he was hurt for a while) but he was able to get it done and did fantastic work. The trim was apparently a PITA as expected. Once he got me on the schedule and came out to DHR him and his crew had both front and rear glass done in less than an hour. Perfect work.
