my truck is a 1999 the build date on the door is feb of 99 and my engine build date is feb 23 99, i was looking to buy a leveling kit for my truck and i was unsure of how to tell if it’s an e99 or l99, i’ve seen people say e99 have the powerstoke badge on the fender and l99 have it on the door but mine by the build date should be an e99 but it has door badges so how can i tell?
Look at the front spring u-bolts - especially since you're buying suspension parts.
If you have an "E99", your front u-bolts will be of the square bend style on this picture.
If it was built as a "99.5", it will have what is known as the semi-round style.
The only other real difference you may have to be aware of will be the panhard rod (track bar) bolt diameter. The early-build truck will have a smaller diameter bolt (and you'll have to forgive me on the actual size right now - it's dark and cold and I don't feel like walking 100 yards out to the shed right now to measure). The early ones will have either an M14 or M16 bolt (shank diameter, not head size) and the later ones will be an M22.
Of course, another thing to measure would be the front hub flange at the wheel mating surface but it requires removal of the caliper bracket and rotor. An E99 will have a 10mm wide flange and a 99.5-later will be 13mm.
The spring u-bolt style will tell you what you need to know for front suspension though....and ya just gotta stick your head in the wheelwell to tell.
Looking directly at the u bolts and axle stuff like Cleatus said is best way to determine. The early L99 trucks generally had a lot of the e99 axle stuff still
My truck is a early l99. Had l99 engine and a mix of e99 and l99 front suspension. Or had. It's all been changed now. But it had e99 steering box, u bolts, track bar. And l99 axle and brakes.
Would these U bolts be early or late 99? I measured the hex head on the track bar and it was 1-3/16. If I remember right, when I first did the brakes after I got it from my aunt, the left and right had different size rotors.
The door sticker shows 3/99
So this answered one of my questions... it appears I ahve a hybrid as well with a march 99 date. early front suspension stuff (that which I looked at) and late 99 intake spider.
I just thought it was weird the track bar I think is late 99 and the u bolts are early. What's it take to change the springs to the late 99 as there are a bunch of leveling kits for that?
My truck is a early l99. Had l99 engine and a mix of e99 and l99 front suspension. Or had. It's all been changed now. But it had e99 steering box, u bolts, track bar. And l99 axle and brakes.
I do not want to derail the OP's thread, but can you walk me through identifying which components I have? how do you id the steering box and the other steering components... axel? I will be getting ready to do brakes before too long and if conversion is the smart thing, and I can get the parts shipped i would rather upgrade for ease of maintenance in the future.
