While I'm at it.. there is a very short hose (heater hose size) behind the top of the water pump. Can it be replaced without removing the water pump, thermostat etc? I don't want to try if it's not possible. Removing anything bolted on, is too big of a project for outside in 100 deg. since most bolts/nuts are rusted solid.
Is that hose the same size as the heater hose?
I found 1/2" 3/4" and 7/8" available.
All lines are full so I can't take it out and go to the parts place to compare.
Thanks for info
I just located a 5/8" hose with the fomoco logo. Is that the size for the 292 short bypass hose?
Yes, 5/8" nipple. I replaced this nipple with one made from aluminum. As Pintoplumber said, remove the two bolts to remove the nipple by lifting the nipple up, then remove the hose from the thermostat housing. When re-installing, leave the new hose a little short so that you can slip everything back in place.

I just tackled this and it was easier than expected.
The only thing I found was that the hose seemed too loose/big. It is dripping slowly at the end by the thermostat. I didn't do any sanding etc. to anything. One of the clamps broke when I touched it, snapped like it was cheap potmetal. Local hardware store had the clamps. Still leaking so I may go with regular hose clamps that I can tighten.
My answer is a little late but you do not have to remove the fitting attached to the water pump to accomplish this task. Just cut the hose to the length needed. Fold it in two and slip it over both ends at the same time. A little WD40 on the inside of the hose makes this work smooth as butter
The clamp at the thermostat was the one that broke. The other one was no issue. The clamps are the type shown here. The new 5/8 hose was so loose at the thermostat, almost sloppy loose. I am going to pick up a Continental brand hose today and switch it out. New clamps did not close it enough to seal. I hear that Continental hoses are thicker walled. I'll post results. Thanks for the tips!
update: AutoZone told me that they no longer sell Continental hoses. The hose they have is thicker and stiffer than the gates hose by a mile. I didn't have time to switch them out. Heavy rain and doctor issues kept me away from it. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow. Here is the broken clamp and the new one. New clamps from handyman hardware.
Why don't you just use a screw type band clamp? That is what I use and haven't even had to tighten it in the 8 years since I rebuilt the motor.
Thanks Skid.. I may do that if this doesn't work out. Do you have a current photo of your motor? That one's 7.5 yes old. It is a great reference image for how and where stuff is, under the hood.

Honestly, I normally would use a band clamp but... I am tired of dealing with issues and hearing opinions of what is the only way.
I dealt in the past with bus customizers)owners and I am tired of arguments. I have kids and grandkids, everyone wants everything their way. I got a doctor who thinks every visit is an opportunity to push the latest meds and she knows I hate meds. I have a wife who has old medical issues from previously fighting stage 4. I work with a bunch of young bitties who want to push the latest agenda and a company director who things everyone is wonderful and refuses to see how things are. My wife loves our new puppy who isn't house trained and has a high pitched bark all hours of the night. It's my job to keep peace. I have a severe hearing deficit for certain tones. Hearing aids do little good.
So when I come here to read up on trucks like mine and find petty issues/differences and venting, I stop wanting to do anything with my truck so I bought the old style clamp.
If that's not enough, I have more. Sorry but it's late, I'm tired.
What size engine do you have? My 239 y block has smaller nipples than the larger engines. Could something been changed over the years? If the hose went on too easily, perhaps a smaller hose is in order.
