Need to get a new set of tires for the new to me 2005 Excursion 2WD with 84,000 miles. Of course, the 265 are the stock tires. For you guys that have owned a 2WD EX did you prefer the 285 or 265 better and why? Don't want a lift but a little larger tire would look a little better.
Thanks, Dan
I have a 2000 2wd Excursion and bought 285 Cooper AT3's for it and really like them, Great all season tire.
But I also changed out the front springs and added air bags and a extra leaf spring to the rear, about a 2" lift.
I've been running a 285/75/16 on both trucks including the wife's 00 Excursion 2wd for years. The last time it needed tires I notices the 16's seem to not have as many choices as in the past, so I decided to go to 18's on both trucks. For her Excursion, I installed 275/70/18 Goodyear Wrangler with Kevlar and have been happy...they fill up the fender wells nicely and also picked the truck up a little to boot.
I wanted to try my 4:56 gears with the 265s when towing through the mountains. Right now the 265s appear to work fine when towing from Atlanta to Florida, but when not towing, the RPMs are on the high side. I usually tow/not tow between 65 and 70 MPH.
We are getting ready to pull our 7,600 pound TT through the Appalachian mountains next week for the first time, so this will tell me if the 265s are good to go or if the revs are still too high.
One thing for sure is, the 265s will give you better gas mileage.

The rpms should be the same running 65-70 mph towing or not. I bet with the 4.56 gears that rig won't even think about slowing down on a grade towing that trailer. I noticed a slight bump in mpg in the Excursion with the 18's given they are a little taller...overall gear ratio reduction...and narrower than the 285's, but it only runs around empty.
