I have an 02 excursion 7.3 and my EATC was acting up for a while. Would just go blank and sometimes come back to life. Rear controls still work.
I have tried all the tricks to get it to come back to life, headlight switch trick etc. and now it is 100% dead.
I assume I’m at the point where I need to admit defeat and replace it. I’m leery of buying used for fear I’ll be fighting this problem again in 1,2,5,20 months. My question is, has anyone ever had theirs refurbished? I have seen a few places advertise the repair online.
Have you looked at Circuit Board Medics site, they are a site sponsor and do a good job in repairing bugs in our electronics. They have a procedure on running a test to determine if the EATC is malfunctioning. Try running it and go from there, if there’s a problem they can usually repair it.
No problem, I learned the hard way and purchased a rebuilt only to find out it was a $40 4x4 vacuum switch. If I had run the test I would have ruled out the EATC and looked into it further. Good luck

I gave their test procedure a try and nothing. The display is completely dead. Zero pixel action. So I’m assuming my display is dead amongst other things.
I’ll ask them what they think they can do, if anything. I’ll report back.
dumb question...but did you check the fuse? My EATC quit working and it was the fuse. It didn't just quit 1 day either. It gradually just stopped working over about 1 week. Finally I noticed it only "quit" during the hottest parts of the day. But worked 9/10 times at 0400 while still cool outside. Visually the fuse looked ok, but once I did a resistance check it was bad. It would expand under load and break the connection.
I've had the same thing happen a few times on headlight fuses

Worth a shot! I just checked the fuse, all good. Replaced the fuse with a new one, sadly no love.
I have contacted a few repair places I found online and they don’t repair the type in my truck. The kind with the thumb wheel for the fan yes, but the push button fan control, no. Wish I could just install dials and be done with digital…
I'm guessing that just like the overhead trip display, there may be failed, dried, expired, or maybe missing (cold solder) capacitors or resistors on this control unit. I think I have an 05 electrical book gifted to me from my dealer, when I have time I can check. The simplest thing to do is measure for incoming power to the climate dash head unit. If that's present, you'll likely have an onboard issue within the control it's self.

Thank you! Yes my next step is to double verify I have power present at the connectors. I’m resigning myself to the fact that I’ll have to get a used one and pray, or do a ‘used EATC please work forever’ dance…
Not sure if this is related to anybody his but I did have a weird erratic thing happen sometimes when I started the Ex. Sometimes after starting the stereo did not come on and I could not control any windows. After a short period of time they would come to life and all was well. I can’t recall if the EATC was out as well or not when that happened.
So, you are a 2002, this may be of some help as it's from the 2005 book. You'll find wire colors will be different, and possibly plug colors too. Hopefully the test points/pin locations will be the same. I just took some pics, a little too deep for me at this hour to study.

Find a junkyard spare, maybe from a 250, Excursion, or other models that used this part, take yours apart and may replace capacitors?
I have the 2001 shop manual as well, but the electronic climate system was introduced to the 2002 and up models.

I broke down and bought one off eBay for $150 but it’s tested and works. I’m going to do what you suggest and check wreckers here. I intend on keeping this unit forever so I would like to have some spares for when the next one craps out. Thanks for all your guidance! I’ll report back on how the eBay unit works out in case there is some other demon at work…
Hey everyone, just thought I should round off this thread with what ending up being my issue. I bought a used unit off eBay (looked new) and plugged it in and voila, I have HVAC again. So it seems my unit just packed it in but hopefully this thread can help others with the great trouble shooting tips here.
