Looking for recommendations for an alarm system for my '01 7.3 diesel.
Must haves are diesel remote start and a starter kill relay.
Nice to have would be door lock, window, rear hatch lock.
Not sure I want the pager/transducer feature. Don't want a fob I have to plug in to charge all the time. I like a fob that has a battery that only needs to be replaced every couple years.
The people I've known in the past that have installed those types of systems...on both Excursions and F series trucks...had nothing but issues. The Excursions are a wiring nightmare with the factory PATS system. One of the Excursions was actually stolen in broad daylight and another F350 has been sitting for years trying to figure out the mess with only 131,000 miles on the clock. There are easier ways to disable the truck to keep it in place...
My 01 7.3 came with an Avital remote start and key-less entry system from the parent company Directed , the same key fob will unlock/lock the doors. It has been stellar, the PATS emulator works every time.
So here is the main problem with adding an alarm to a PATS equipped Ford.
your typical street level car thief knows an alarmed Excursion is a easy pick, why ?
because to defeat the PATS system many companies just hide a spare cloned key up by the receiver module rendering the PATS system inoperable.
once PATS is deactivated it is simple to hot wire a Excursion,
as everyone knows a alarm screeching is pointless as they are just ignored.
seriously, when was the last time you called the cops for an alarm going off ? Never
the factory PATs system is the best antitheft security measure, to steal a PATS activated vehicle you need to tow it. (which is how the professionals do it nowadays )
I can't remember if the PATs system will sound the alarm and disable the truck if the door lock is jimmied and door is opened. I seem to remember the door opening would activate the alarm and assume would also disable the truck from starting. I had my F350 front door key lock punched and broken into...first time ever in over 20 years of having both these trucks, but I'm purdy picky about where I go and leave them. Luckily it was a $20 fix with just a new lock cylinder, plus I received another for a spare.
I love it, I’ve been installing vipers for circuit city since the early 90’s which probably explains why I never have any issues, I kinda know what I’m doing 😁 they can be complex to install, I can send you a wiring color and location document
