The '67 428 in mine is a 2 piece also. When I pulled the engine to reseal it I was a little surprised to find a rope seal in it. Don't know why, I guess I just didn't expect it.
I did notice from witness marks on the crank that at some point there had been a 2 piece seal installed but it had been installed backwards. Since I already had the 2 piece I went ahead and installed it the correct way.
6 years and 30k later, no problems.
If you go from a rope seal to a 2 piece you will have to remove the small pin in the seal groove of the cap (If it is in there. Mine was already pulled).
Thank you 440sixpack and AmerigoHauler. I'll get both seals like I had planned.
Just curious and hoping its not a rope.
The engine was rebuilt in 1972 and sat ad was never started until I started it last year.
I did have to replace the valve stem seals that dried out so I guess that's what happened to the rear mail seal.
