No horn and cruise control
Hello,
I have a '97 Ranger XLT, the horn and cruise control stopped working and I've checked all of my fuses. I'm not sure what the problem might be or how to repair it. Could there be a wiring issue? There's a red and green wire that's randomly broken underneath the dash, and a whole random string of wires that aren't connected to anything so I have no idea where to even begin there. But I'm not sure what else it could be. I recently replaced the clutch and slave cylinder and I'm getting new parts for other things that aren't working. But I would like to have my steering wheel functions working again.
Thanks to anyone who has ideas.

Welcome to FTE.
No replies yet, so will see if I can get things started. Since you seem to like turning your own wrenches, use, borrow, or come by the inexpensive ELM scan-tool & running FORScan diagnostic free-ware on the viewing device of choice as described here Low Cost ELM Scantool - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com) as this inexpensive but powerful combo is tweaked for Fords it can query All the vehicle computer / controllers for trouble code clues, like the GEM & Body controllers, then post up All code Numbers, as they can often help focus a trouble-shoot. Some initial thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.

The horn and cruise are both steering wheel mounted controls. Older horns used a sliding brush to conduct the power to the horn or relay. Newer use a 'clock spring' that flexes as the wheel is turned in use. It is used to conduct the cruise signals to the cruise control electronics, and also to send a signal to the horn relay. I think brush & ring systems are no longer used. Pull the wheel to see...
The cover with the controls can likely be removed from the steering wheel by removing a few screws from the 'back side', away from the driver. The panel will come free, and have some wires still connected, so be careful. The clockspring is further in...
