Working on fixing oil leaks on the engine. I pulled the engine last week. Removed the pan and the rear seal retainer to fix the leaks. I decided to pull the main bearing caps to check their condition as I have no idea if it's been rebuilt before. The rear most main bearing journal has some pretty good grooves in it. The bearing has worn thru the first layer and the second is peeling. The next one forward also had grooves but not as bad as the rear. The bearings look to be original as they have the ford markings. I'll call around Tuesday to see if I can find a shop to take a look at the crankshaft to see if it can be ground. Just in case it's to far gone, I started looking on the web for cranks for this engine. I can't anything. Even Rockauto has nothing. What would my next steps be if this crank needs replaced ?
From what you describe you are probably going to need a complete rebuild. If you add a location to your info possibly someone in that area can recommend a machine shop.
I'm located near North Vernon Indiana.
I talked with a couple of the local machine shops. Seems most don't machine crankshafts. They all send them to the same guy in Southern Indiana. I called him direct. He said he is six months out on crankshafts and two years out on engine rebuilds. I don't mind rebuilding the engine myself. I would have the crank, block and head done at a machine shop. I can do the tear down and assembly work.
I did a rough price estimate of $2000 for a complete rebuild for parts and machine work.
After the machine work on the block, crank, rods and heads and the parts I think you estimate is on the low side. I know I can't do it at this cost and I have done two in the past couple of years.
I saw two 292 crankshafts on ebay today. Although you can never be sure about ebay. I seem to recall that 272 and 292 cranks are the same but not positive and a 312 would work with some modification. Did you look at this forums marketplace? I have found a few y blocks on facebook marketplace in the past as well which is how I got mine. Best of luck.

Reason: adding info
I found a shop down in Louisville that machines cranks. They have a three weeks lead time. I'm going to take it down there this weekend. Then I'll work on getting the block and head work done at a local shop.
I'm ready take the front pulley/balancer off. I have a puller but I don't know what size bolts to use. I see two threaded holes in the pulley to use with the puller. What size are those threads ?
Clean the holes and try screwing in a 3/8th course thread bolt.
thanks for the confirmation.
I cleaned the holes and then the bolts went in perfectly. I was able to get the balancer off without any issues.
I also got the timing cover off.
Next in the timing chain, then I should be ready to lift out the crank.
When going back with the timing chain and gears, the Y block timing marks line up different than on other engines.
thanks for the advice, I noticed that too. The guy who sold the truck to me also included a 1961 Ford truck service manual, also a 1962-1963 shop manual supplement. I'll have to follow those closely when putting everything back together.
Looks like you are making good progress.
What did they quote you for head and block work ?
Around here it's $500 for heads and $280 for the block.
What rebuild kit did you buy ?
Are you replacing pistons too ?
I had the block done about a year ago, was a 1957 date 272 I had it bored out to the 292 specs, machining for the block ended up being about $500 (hot tank remove and replace freeze plugs magnaflux boring ect) the crank was cut 20/20 and that was about 200 at the local carquest machine shop. The pistons I went with are a set of flat top sealed power, the new pistons with rings on E-bay was about $220. As for the head work I dont have a price as of right now
