Fuel filter after 5k miles

About 5k miles on this filter

inspite of using anti gel, algicide, water remover, this is one nasty filter after about 5k miles.

I ripped it open n cleaned ne of the squares to see if there was any fungus in the media and surprisingly the media actually looked fine.

so water ever that white (or was white) material is made of , seems to be doing it’s job as a pre filter media.

there is some slimy brown stuff on the water separator screen.

truck has 14k miles on it and this is filter set number two.

change the engine bay filter as well.

I have a DPK return filter but not sure if it needs changing since the fuel that hits it is filtered twice.

anyway…here’s your Saturday afternoon eye opener.

So are those three separate additives you use?

It sucks you can't measure the pressure at the HPFP like I can... or did you ever find out if you have that PID?

You change every 5k miles? Or was this just to see how a new additive was working?

for some reason, I can measure lift pump with forscan OBDLink (forgot which) but not with idash.

with idash I can measure rail requested vs actual and rail flow rate.

I went 10k on the stock filter and it looked as funky as this one so I was thinking to try 5k but didn’t expect it to be this funky.

im going to peak at it at 2.5k .

You should shoot an email to Banks and see what they say...

I definitely feel it's pertinent to monitor my fuel pressure at the HPFP as I take my filter CIs out with every third (7k miles) oil change as per the factory manual for my 16.

Are those additives all separate?

Are you fueling up from the same place each time, or for the most part?

That looks much worse than my filter that was changed at 30,000. I don't use any additives.

The 17s changed from our 11 to 16 gen trucks. It's a stand alone diesel fuel filter/water separator which their in tank primary pump pumps fuel to before it makes it's way up to the secondary fuel filter in the engine bay. No more DFCM like the 11 to 16s have...

That's kind of what my upper filter looked like... but it was also hard to say since I had to hack it open with a hack saw and there was still some fuel in it so there were plastic shavings all over too... I need to get one of those filter cutters like Overkill has!

The cutter won't open the plastic cases, at least mine wouldn't (identical to Dave's) I cut it open with a saw

I change mine every other oil change. Or about 20,000 miles. And mine has never looked that dirty. I'm not religious about additives. But do put Opti-Lube Summer in the warmer months and XPD in the cold months. Kinda hit and miss.
I do burn thru fuel. 3,000 miles a month or about 35,000 miles a year. Which causes me to wonder if the time in your truck might be considered. If 5,000 miles in your truck takes 12 months, does algae grow in your tank? I live in a very dry climate, Would living in high humidity and long cycles between consuming the fuel lead to growth? Just spewing ideas
