The AOD transmission (PRN(D)D1) in my 1991 F150 Reg Cab LB 5.0L is slipping. I found a AOD (PRN(D)21) from a 1995 F150 Reg Cab LB 5.0L. Will this work? Or, is the 1995 an Electronic transmission that I don't have the plug for on my 1991? If it won't work, what are my options besides spending $2k on a rebuild that is more than the value of the truck?
See post 5. '88 to '93 from a truck or from behind a V8 are the preferred ones. Ford fiddled with this transmission all the way through it's life and the later the box, the more fixes and improvements were applied.
Slipping when? 1-2-3 gears? If so, you probably have a dying forward clutch pack. Typical AOD failure due to the apply and release of those tiny forward clutches when it shuffles in and out of OD, this is why I say only use OD for extended freeway driving. The 4-3 and especially the 4-2 downshift is especially hard on this unit.
IMO, find someone with a core from a truck and rebuild the thing yourself. It is beyond easy. Upgrade to the 2" OD band (need the matching drum), use a minimum of 'B' code servo (I prefer the billet one from Superior), extra direct clutch, extra intermediate, extra forward, nice external cooler, pan with a drain plug, and a good mild shift kit. Superior's or Transgo's. Fresh converter. I bet you could have this done for $700 at the most.
A junkyard pullout is a fools errand unless you know it was just rebuilt. The average driver does not know how the unit works internally and the unit suffers abuse by accident.
