My 1949 for has new master cylender all new wheel cylenders. My brakes lock up. I have to open the break bread to get them to release. I have bread them multiple times. What is next. Thanks for any help you got.
Presuming a stock setup and some of the low hanging obvious fruit out of the way, the valve(s) in the master cylinder could be locked up. I believe the NAPA part UP1 would be the correct rebuild kit with new components.
If the master was rebuilt I would check the the assembly sequence of the various parts. As I recall the kit diagram and the Ford diagram were slightly different and I somehow messed up during assembly. Also when the return valve opens the fluid has to have someplace to go and if the piston is too deep in the cylinder it will not allow the by-pass port to open and result in the wheel cylinders not unloading. My brakes worked fine on a cold day, on the first really hot day going down the highway the fluid expanded in the system and the breaks began to drag. I had to bleed a wheel cylinder to release the pressure. If your cylinder is new check that there is a little slack from the actuating rod to the piston to make sure it is returning home and not blocking the bypass port. Google a cutaway diagram for clarity. I would adjust the rod first to see if that fixes it, this is much easier than pulling the cylinder out of the truck. Hope this helps.
I had a problem with the existing push rod was too long for the new master cylinder. It did not completely release. As the brake fluid got warm, my brakes locked up. I was able to find an adjustable rod on ebay. That took care of the issue.
I second Brian's vote for the Push Rod being too long. If it's just barely hanging up .. pressure builds in the system &
your brakes lock up. We looked at everything & it ended up being a push rod that was 1/8 in. too long.
