My daughter just bought a 2021

She got a 2021 Big Bend edition that was taken in on trade on Friday and she bought it Saturday. The vehicle only has 4800 miles on it so it's very clean and barely used. After looking it over yesterday, I noticed that it calls for 5W-20 oil. Seems kind of thin for an ecoboost engine, is that what you all are using? Any issues to report?

My impression of the car over all is that's it's a nice commuter vehicle, quite small and seemingly not quite as fuel efficient as it should be. Looks to be a nice easy driver with enough room for passengers. I do like the square look and it's stance for easy ingress / egress.

She paid $34K for the car which is probably about what the MSRP was on it. The dealer would hardly budge, I tried like the dickens to convince her to wait till the end of the year and see if production levels increase but she was determined. Oh well, not my money. She did buy the Ford ESP 7 year 100K mile premium care warranty based on my urgent recommendation. I'm hearing about and reading a bunch of issues with the 1.5L in the Escapes.

Personally, for the same money, she would have done better with a Hyundai Tuscan AWD and she would have had a bigger car with a better warranty. She is married with a 12 and an 8 year old. Won't take long to out grow the little Bronco.

Congrats to your daughter. I have never warmed up to Korean car brands, and in Michigan the Korean brands are generally budget choices, nowhere near the status or cool factor of the new Bronco Sport.

I consider all the people who choose to buy a Jeep Wrangler for its cool factor when it's such a compromise as a daily driver, and the Bronco Sport has very little compromise in comparison. (If you want an example of using a lot of gas, the Wrangler is there...)

If their family is tall and the kids go everywhere with them, it's not very large as a passenger carrier, but if this is mom's personal DD, with occasional kid carrying, it should be fine. Hope their family has some safe miles and good times in their new BSport!

I have been pleasantly surprised with my Big Bend 1.5l. Drives great and is comfortable. Space is definitely lacking behind the drivers seat but it's usually just me in it or one other passenger. My Great Pyrenees mix fit in the back end with the rear seats in the upright position.

Congrats to your daughter Tim...good move on the ESP...as you know...the Bronco has been problematic. A nurse at "work" just picked up a Sport Outerbanks...she paid MSRP...somewhere around $37,000...got a great trade on her Toyota. She asked me about the ESP and at my behest she bought one. She's a happy gal...says she gets just a bit over 30 MPG. Virtually all of her driving is hghway.

In my mind, if one is looking for a square rugged looking mini SUV that really means business, you can't go wrong with a Subaru Forester and even fully equipped, it comes in way below the Sport, has more room and a much better anticipated reliability rating.

We've had 2 Foresters (my '09 DD with a stick that was literally $20k--now in my son's hands with 180k miles, and our current '17 Forester that was $26k). I can fit a bicycle, both wheels on, behind the front seat, where the Bronco Sport is too short and loses points for me on that metric. And the back seat passengers in the Forester have really good legroom.

Subarus have not been without problems like head gaskets and stuff (my '09 got new head gaskets) and they lose to the Bronco Sport on looks and image. Foresters seem to offer a color palette that belongs to Buick, and their styling (at least on the '14-18 and '19 up generations) is kind of dumb with strange creases and angles, where Ford did a great job on the Bronco Sport. Outdoorsy, trucky, and tough looking IMO, along with a good selection of colors. I would say that it's more likely that a Forester will go 250k miles than a Bronco Sport or Escape.

But spending time on the Forester page, Subarus are not very available these days and everything is marked up so instead of our $26k 2017, you'd be looking at mid 30k prices.
