I'm going to be replacing both hubs and all of the seals associated with the hubs which is already in the plans. I also would like to address my leaky pinion seal. If the front axle is anything like the rear axle, you don't have to take the carrier out to change the pinion oil seal. That would be nice. I don't know that it's like that though because I have not looked at it.
Now, I know that our trucks have the 1410 Spicer u-joints for the rear drive shafts. Do the u-joints that connect to the axle shaft to the stub shaft also take the same u-joint? I am thinking of replacing them if they are bad while I have the hubs off. Especially if I end up having to replace inner axle seals. In a perfect world I would like to replace both inner seals, the pinion seal, the u-joints, and all the seals associated with the new hubs. Pretty much a full R&R. But there's no point in replacing stuff that's not broke and my inner axle seals are not leaking so, what I need to know is what size u-joints I need, if I should need them, and if the carrier has to come out to change the pinion seal. I looked through the PSD tech folder and could not find anything to do with the front axle pinion seal. Heck, I couldn't find anything on how to remove the carrier but YouTube sorted that out. I'm hoping one of you were going to come on here and tell me that the front axle is the same as the rear in terms of the pinion seal being on the outside of the case. I will also replace the stub shaft if needed. RockAuto carries them. Of course I would have to take the hub off to see that I need stub axles. I'm hoping I don't but, I might just pop one of the hubs off and see how bad it looks. Just popping the hub off shouldn't damage the o-ring should it? Thanks in advance guys!
Yes the p[inion seal is easy to replace once you remove the yoke
The 4x4 axle u joints are different than any others on the trucks drivelines
You should not need stub shafts unless the spindle bearings never got greased and ate into the stub shafts
Leave the inner axle seals alone if they are not leaking now
Good luck
I never replace the inner axle seals unless they are leaking. Yes, the carrier has to be removed for that.
Leaky pinion seal is easy to R&R.
No need to replace u-joints if they aren’t bad.
Expect the knuckle seals and axle dust seals are bad. Plan to fill the unit bearings with grease and grease the axle bearings inside the unit bearings while you’re in there. Bad knuckle seals allow the axles to move up and down inside the axle ‘C’. When they are bad enough, they can take out the thrust washers and damage stub shafts.
I buy all of these SPICER parts from Ventures Truck Parts. They have kits for common problems.
If the front axle is off an e99, be prepared for the pinion seal to be stepped vs the l99+ single diameter
Having one of each style on hand may save you down time during the project

99-01 F250 and SRW F350 came with Dana 50. DRW trucks of this era got the Dana 60. In 2002, they phased out the D50 and everything got D60 until 2005 when the Super 60 came out (coil spring front axle).
Hold on there! I was under the impression that my 2001 parts truck had a D60 in it. Is that wrong?
If it’s not from a DRW, ‘probably’ a D50.
For 99% of people, the D50 is adequate. My buddy broke his D50 pinion shaft - but he was slinging mud with 46” tall tires towing his dump trailer when it failed.
Yeah, but I've been up since 2p yesterday and am winding down after my nightshift. You are probably half awake sipping coffee on the porch watching wildlife and trying not to drop the laptop balanced on your knee

D50 is adequate but here's my intentions (one of these days, honest). I have a deceased van out back with a D60LS in it and I would like to put that carrier into what I thought was the D60 in my parts truck and put it under my truck.
