Want to use aftermarket smaller steering wheel to use on a original steering column--or will that make it hard to turn -- have a chance to buy this 53 ( I forgot how this ORIGINAL stuff handles and is so challenging to drive-- to use to driving my F-100 Street Rods with all modern drive trains--I just was thinking on buying a original to add to the stable ) Thanks
I don't know of anyone making smaller 53-55 style steering wheels. I have seen smaller 57 Chevy car steering wheels but none for Ford trucks.
Yes, a smaller diameter wheel will make the truck harder to steer. I don't think a rebuilt steering box will make it steer easier. A rebuilt box is recommended if you have a lot of play in the wheel.
That steering wheel in the picture looks in good shape.
With stock stuff, the large steering wheel gives you more leverage to turn. If you go to a Mustang 2 front suspension with a quick ratio rack and pinion, a smaller steering wheel will be fine.
As everyone else has said, the steering wheel is appropriately sized to provide the proper leverage to make the turns. A smaller diameter wheel looses that leverage and can be a safety and driveability issue unless the remainder of the steering components have accompanying accommodating engineering changes (such as a complete Mustang II setup which can have power steering).
