Under Coating Fenders

I searched and read post about doing This. Before I make a mess I read that first I should wipe the under side with thinner on the front steel fenders and rear fiber glass to take off any oil or release agent that is on them before I do any scuffing. After doing this I coat them heavy with the herculiner bed kit I got. Does this sound like the way I should do this? Thanks'

If you want it to really stick, wash it with wax and grease remover before and after you scuff. Don't use thinner, as it just redistributes the oils and grease, whereas wax and grease remover lifts them.

I would read the instructions on the liner as to what grit to scuff with

If you really want it to stick, wash it, sand it, wash it, shoot a coat of epoxy primer, then undercoat it. I used Raptor on my 51 F1 and did it as I described.

First off read the instructions on your bedliner...if you are thinking about spraying/rolling it in winter temps I would recommend you heat the garage or wait til it warms up to at least 70 degrees. Bare metal should be primed, fiberglass can be scuffed but does not need primer. I have sprayed various brands of bedliner under fenders and found that it you thin the product as much as the manufacturer recommends, you can get a much smoother finish...more like leather. I like the smoother finish as it does not hold dirt and debris as easily.

Thanks. The front has that black primer that they put on the new fenders. I will pick up some wax and grease remover as you told me about. I have 3 big heaters that heat the garage real good. Working on this while I am tearing my pole barn down to make room for a new metal building for a work shop

My new shop did not come with a heater. I was out there the other day and could see my breath inside the shop...not good. I bought a propane heater that was just delivered yesterday. Ran it in my 3-car garage on low for 30 minutes and it felt like a sauna! Anxious to get back out to the shop now.
As for the W&G remover...when the solvent is in its liquid state, any residue on the panel may have crap suspended in it. If allowed to evaporate this gunk will just settle back on the panel. The best way to apply the W&G solvent is to use a spray bottle...spray the solvent on the panel and then use a clean rag to wipe it off before it dries. Good luck...
