Working on a 62 f350 4 speed drw Napco AWD came with a 292 2bbl. If I rebuild an engine and want a little extra power should I use a 312 from a 62 Tbird that I can get for roughly 4 to 500 dollars , or stick with the 292? Im planning on 30 over bore , mild cam, headers , and any other suggestions that you all have would be greatly appreciated. thank you
A 312 in a '62 T-Bird will have been swapped. You will want to check the block numbers and possibly pull the oil pan to verify.
Everything else equal, for a mild build, the 312 will produce more power but it will be more expensive because of the larger main size, and therefore, the bearings and rear main seal required. 312s also have issues with cam tunnel alignment, which can be expensive to correct.
If you want to take it up a notch, you can machine the 312 crank to fit the 292 block. That gives the same stroke but should produce even more power due to the reduced friction of smaller diameter journals than an otherwise equal 312.
You can get 300hp out of a 292 pretty easily so you will probably be happy with the 292.
Since cost is a factor I think we will retain the 292 and do what we can with it. Thanks Y blocks are certainly not in my wheelhouse , appreciate your input.
62 heads are low compression heads. ECZ-G heads have bigger valves and a smaller compression chamber increasing compression. Be aware composite head gaskets can lower compression as well. I like the stock ford barrel intake and either ford ram horns or sanderson headers for exhaust. They flow better than the stock cross over.
Thanks will be doing home work as the 292 gets torn down . Im not sure I will have headers option with the napco front axle . Can someone recommend a distributor for this application?
A few folks have mentioned to me that water pumps are difficult to find . What is a good source to find a quality rebuilt water pump? As I am removing the engine it looks like the the paint color of the Y block was dark blue ,is that correct for 62 ? To aid the cooling of the rebuilt engine should I go to a 6blade fan ? Thanks for your help
