Heya, my f350's clutch has been a little weird for a few years, but I've just put up with it. Basically the symptoms now are that it is very easy to slip the clutch with the looney street tune in 2,3,4,5th gear, and I have to be careful going up a grade with a trailer as it'll slip the clutch pretty easily. In addition, if I do try to punch it, when I go to depress the clutch pedal, if feels really weird and different than normal, like it's very light and not doing anything. A few years ago my mechanic installed this metal backing plate where the clutch rod meets the firewall... I forget why. I checked the bushing on the clutch pedal and it has a tiny amount of play, but not bad.
Anyone have an idea what it could be? I see these trucks have no inspection plates at the bell housing to look at the clutch
Do I need to remove it from the transmission to check? The fluid level in the clutch reservoir is good. I replaced the whole assembly a couple years ago when I first bought the truck.
No, the diapham is in the reservoir and has to be removed to check the fluid level. A friend of mine filled it up on top of the diapham and the reservoir went low without him knowing it, it always looked full. His clutch started acting up and he finally noticed the diapham and removed it to fill up the reservoir.
How many miles? Original clutch? First owner/second?
Over the years I've found that some people don't really know how to drive well with a clutch and burned them out way sooner than they should of failed at.
Maybe its just time for a new clutch? If so I'd go to a locally owned tranny shop and ask for a quote. Alot cheaper than anything the dealership should quote you and
if its a reputable shop they should give you a warranty in writing on the receipt to back up their work for a year or whatever they offer for warranty.
I just had the clutch replaced when having the manual transmission rebuilt on my F-450. They replaced the slave cylinder inside the housing, but the reservoir cylinder did not leak so they did not. Have had a similar issue on a Toyota pu I had years ago, replaced the original one with one from O'Reilly's, was a little funky. This was 20 years ago. Seemed to get better after finally getting to work somewhat correctly. And about manual transmission trucks, NEVER rest your foot on the clutch pedal. My wife used to do that on my F-600, she thought it was ok to keep her foot on it, even though not pushing, and I had to replace the clutch.
