Hello. This is my first posting in this forum. I normally hang out on the 61-66 forum because I have a 62 F250 4x4. However, mine has a 351W in it. I am unfamiliar with anything technical in regards to the Y Block family. The reason that I am posting a question here is to try and obtain some information for my sister in regards to her car she picked up last year. She has a 1954 Sunliner with a 292 with 312 heads. It currently has a triple 2 barrel set up but she wants to get away from that and go to either a single four barrel or an EFI kit similar to the Sniper system. Due to cost, I have a feeling that she will go the route of a single 4 barrel with vacuum secondaries and electric choke. It appears that after a quick internet search that the usual manifold companies do not really have anything available for the Y Blocks. I came across two different part numbers on the slick sixties forum that I believe are the same manifold that stated: ECZ-9425-B is the best factory 4v manifold for a Y-Block and Ford part number: B7A9424B 4V Intake Manifold. Fits: 1957 Ford/Thunderbird 292/312 / 1957 Mercury 312 / 1958 Mercury Medalist 312.
If anyone can give me advice on a manifold setup or if anyone has one available, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any and all advice / info.
You want to identify the heads for the best results. '55 and '56 are medium port. '57 and newer are large port. It does not matter so much what they originally came on. In fact, many "312" heads were also factory installed on 292s.
ECZ 9425-A will match the medium ports but the port layout is not as good and an adapter is required to use a modern carb. ECZ 9425-B is the best factory 4 barrell intake and should be used with large port heads and can mount a modern carb although modification to the throttle bores may be required, depending on the size of the carb and whether a spacer is used. You can usually interchange medium and large port parts but because of that port difference, difficulty sealing can sometimes arise. You cannot swap small ('54 only) and large port items, which is another reason to id the heads.

There are aftermarket manifolds available from Mummert (link above) and Blue Thunder. The blue thunder looks a lot like the factory intake but is aluminum and flows a lot better. If you find an intake with the ECZ 9425-B ID on it and it is aluminum, it is the Blue Thunder intake, period, no matter who is advertising it. Blue Thunder is often on Ebay and probably found other places. Both manifolds are excellent. Mummert's is slightly better for all out performance. Blue thunder has the heat riser passage, like original, which may be important, depending on the climate. Mummert does not have that.
If the engine currently installed has a '56 or older distributor, then the distributor must also be upgraded to '57 or newer or equivalent aftermarket distributor. '56 and older is all vacuum, Load-O-Matic and mechanical advance will be required.
Thank you for the info. I greatly appreciate it. I will get her to send me the casting numbers off of the heads. Unfortunately she is located out of state. I was leaning towards the intake from Mummert, but I'll verify the head info and then give Mummert a call.
