Transmission whine in 1st through 3rd gears (man M5oD)
Hey everyone, I'm having a hard time with my M5oD. Wouldn't go into 4th gear on the tollway, then I lost ALL gears. Pulled over swearing I smelled trans fluid, went through the motion of shifting gears and after that took off again. I noticed the day before that their was a whine, thought it was maybe just the wind up.
I do know it's been slowly leaking since changing the fluid a few months ago, yesterday it took 1qt of ATF no problem as well... Thinking of going straight to synchromesh oil as it's helped others in the past, possibly topping it off with 80w-90
Transmissions and rear axles need lube to stay working.
They also need the right kind of lube.
You said you used ATF and thinking of using a different type and topping off with normal gear oil?
You need to KNOW what type it takes and use it and if it has something else in it now it has to be drained.
All my trans, T18, NP435 & SROD all use normal gear oil but has to be rated for GL-4 NOT GL-5
The only trans that I have that uses ATF in my Ford WC T5 in a car I am building and it took a lot of searching what it should use.

Google and other sources say ATF is correct for my transmission (M5oD) it is also okay to use gear oil. Others have used ATF and about half a quart of 80-90 while others have even used synchromesh and about the same amount of 80-90. Yes, the ATF would need to be completely drained before switching to a gear oil if I go the route. I *MAY* wind up switching to a ZF5 IF I can find one...
