Use sealant on pinion seal?

I haven't put one in the stock rear diff but, I typically put a slight film of sealer on any seals that are bare metal. Especially if the bore is not perfect. I don't put it on seals that have a rubber coating or has the bead of sealer applied from the manufacturer. JMO.

I use a little "Permatex Ultra" on outer edge of sealing area in pinion housing if using a cheap seal, or it has any small damages or scratches. if I'm using a "National" brand seal, I don't. It comes with something similar to a ring of dried sealant.
also as added insurance I put some sealant on splines inside the driveshaft yoke. I've see gear oil leak out splines and from under nut a couple times

Put sealer of your preference (I use aviation form a gasket) on the outside metal portion and don't forget to put grease on the lip portion of the seal where the pinion goes in. This prevents dry metal of the pinion from eating the rubber seal.
