Mystery WWII Salvation Army Marmon-Herrington

A week or two ago I was on-line looking for examples of tonner M-Hs, and landed on this picture. Reading the graphics on its side it was a gift from a PA Salvation Army chapter to their Aussie counterparts. I think this is the neatest thing I’ve ever seen. But the question I had was whether it’s a one ton or 1.5 ton platform. I pulled up schematic drawings of both the 1941 ton and 1.5 ton panels, but saw no easy way to say because of the differences. So the emails and text messages began to circulate around the group getting opinions. I’ll hold off with the answer and hope Josh posts his graphics that I think solved it. I just love this truck and hope it somehow has survived down under. Stu

I'll be the contrarian and say you can't determine. It appears to be 3/4 or Tonner wheelbase to me but MH was known to move axles. I expect we are all aware of the 37 MH built from a 1.5 ton chassis shortened with a half ton bed installed. This panel may be similar. Also, I suspect the body may have been built in Australia starting with a chassis & cab or a chassis & cowl. The lack of any attempt at matching the door moldings seems unlikely in the USA, particularly when you could simply start with a Ford factory body. However, down under I think there was a requirement for local manufacturer that was mostly met by making bodies in country. Can you determine if it is right hand drive?
Regardless, fascinating.

Roof line on the pictured panel goes straight back while the roof line on the schematics is rounded at the rear. Also the front bumper guard on the pictured truck is similar to one shown on photos posted on a current thread on the Ford Barn. My guess and its only a gut feeling guess is that the body is Australian origin. Regardless a very cool truck.

This is the link to the thread over on the Barn: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=292799
The Australian military vehicle with a bumper guard similar to the one posted is posting number 68. This '41 panel is also posted on the same thread on the Barn.

Josh put his computer skills to work on this and laid the profile of the truck on top of the two schematics. Pretty clearly the thing has a 1.5 ton foundation. It also has similarities to these military trucks pictured in that Ford barn thread. Plus, the left side front differential in the one pic says 1.5 ton. And last, also mentioned was the 1937 prototype that Don Chew cloned which had a 1.5 ton foundation. Stu

Compare the rear axle shaft flanges, smooth. The lighter axle flanges had a raised circular pattern.
