My AC lines were cut before a bought this truck years ago, and I have no desire to get that working again. I want to delete the AC compressor from my accessory drive, but I'm too cheap to pay for the idler pulley that takes its place. Looking at my routing, I think I could take the belt over the tensioner pulley and down to the power steering pump. Of course, I would need a shorter belt. Would this work? Is it ok to pass the belt over the tensioner instead of under it?
No you cannot. The spring only works in direction. Get the idler pulley from a junkyard if you don’t want to pay for a new one or just leave the compressor there to act as an idler. It isn’t doing anything other than that right now. You will be buying a new belt if you try to delete the pulley.
So long as the A/C clutch is disconnected, the pump is acting as an idler pulley anyway, so just leave it until you chance upon a factory non-A/C pulley in the junkyard.
Send me your address in a PM and I'll send you an idler pulley. I fixed my AC this past August and took an idler pulley off. It's just sitting in a box in the garage. Would rather someone in need have it.
