Hi,
Just looking for some general info here. I'm looking at a 98 Econoline with the 4.2L it has 138K on it. I've been told these engines are prone to leaking and blown head gaskets, but then I'm told they are very dependable, so I'd like to hear from some of you that actually own the 4.2L...Looking at pulling the trigger today or tomorrow.

I had a 2006 F150 with the 4.2/5-speed manual that I bought new and kept for 10 years. Honestly it's one of the best trucks I ever had and I regret ever trading up for a newer truck. I worked that 2006 pretty hard and it hung right in there with me
I have a 2004 F150 4.2 Heritage. Manual Trans. I bought it for a grand from the business I used to work for. It has 204,000 miles on it, and runs perfectly. Small issues like the starter, alternator, Crankshaft synchronizer, and serpentine belt had to be replaced, but that is all easy stuff to do yourself. but I am really happy with the truck. Its not a super fast truck, but its reliable. I put a performance air filter in and that made the most difference so far.
Thanks for all the replies...I settled on an older van. 1990 E150 Conversion with the 5.8L A4OD...Just dropped about $600 into the frontend, need to find a fuel switch valve and get the rear tank hooked back up so I can run on both tanks, has a few mior electrical problems but hey that's all the fun in owning these things, keeps me home out of the bars....LOLOL
