What is the difference between a 56 straight axle width & a Crown Vic? And how to go about narrowing a CV, ? I do have access to a complete machine & fab shop. The front end is almost given to me. What kind of tire sizes can be run
If I remember correctly, the CV frontend is 5" wider than a stock frontend. Which pretty much limits you to the late model Mustang type wheels to fit under the fenders. I believe the Crown Vic front end uses an aluminum crossmember which would require it to be welded back together after shortening. The CV is not the best fitting swap but it does seem to get a lot of attention because they are cheap and plentiful. I'm sure a google search will turn up a bunch of stuff. Good luck !
They usually remove the center of the cradle of the CV to shorten it. Then they use a different cars rack and pinion. Send a note to Ed Ritchie (FB) or Dave Held (FB) Owner of Team321 LLC. They both are a wealth of information and both sell narrowed or Narrowing kits for the Crown Vic IFS (independent front suspension). Keep us posted on your decision and progress.
