Axle sealant/gasket
I have a ‘50 F3, during my first ignorant attempt to remove the rear brake drum I started by removing the axle from the hub. I know now that isn’t necessary.
Now I need to put the axle back, what sealant should I use? If Im reading the shop manual correctly it originally had a leather gasket.

Permatex actually makes an RTV especially for gear oil. I've used the regular black stuff on differentials without problems. Their website should have all the info you need. A gasket will make it easier to pull apart next time. RTV will still work, just be a little more work to pull apart and clean off. People use RTV there often.
