Normally I buy Motorcraft, but looking at replacement power steering hoses and Gates are half the cost. Is there really a difference in quality or is it just a difference in markup?
When it comes to radiator hoses and such, I go with Gates all day long as they are cheaper and, depending on where you buy them, you can get a lifetime warranty. Power steering hoses are a different animal, as are any hoses that have attached rigid lines and threaded fittings. It's been my experience that the Motorcraft ones have cleaner, better cut threads and the bends in the rigid sections are more accurately done than other aftermarket brands. And they also come with any applicable mounting point tie-downs and/or hose protection materials like fluted loom or heat wrap.
I have about a years worth of running with the Gates lines. They do way with some of the expensive part of hard line and fitment, as do all of the aftermarket versions. No fitment issues.
Its hard to say why Ford did the hoses the way they did. In some cases they may have had a reason or it was in their design protocol. I’ve run into situation with their design where it’s been so long no one knows why they have to do certain things, and it a “changing the direction of an elephant” to get it off the books. Like taxes.
