News to me. I have two 3.0L engines in my Aerostars (371,000 & 430,000) without any problems. Also had another Aero with a 3.0L, but at about 200,000 miles the top came off of #5 piston and was rattling around in the cylinder as I drove it home one day.
like any other engine, if it's been run like a dragster and no service, lower end problems can be expected.
I change the oil about every 2500 miles. I figure oil is cheap, but engines are not.
However, I do make the engine work as I typically haul loads so heavy that the springs bottom out and I do it over any mountain. On level driving I normally hold the speed at 70mph max, though I have been known to push my Aeros to over 85.
