Rear tank Exhaust exit

I'm looking for suggestions on where are you guys exiting your exhaust at. I've got a 60 with a 292 and dual exhaust. I'm looking to use a mustang tank under the bed. The way the current exhaust is set up, there might be clearance issues. The tail pipes also extend out under the low hanging bumper, which doesn't look optimal in my opinion. How are you guys routing/exiting your exhaust?

I agree with you that it doesn't look good hanging that low. How about turning it out behind the rear tires... ~Pat

I second that out behind the rear tires. Or just exit it in the same place they do on modern trucks out the side just in front of the bumper.

Putting a gas tank in the rear portion of the frame will probably make you take a more creative approach as to how you will route your exhaust. This will also include the removal or relocating of a cross member. I had to deal with those issues when I installed a rear tank in my '58. My solution was to run dual pipes and mufflers that exited just ahead of the rear tires. Going this way makes things much easier because you don't have pipes going up and over the rear end housing. I ran an "H" pipe between the two main pipes which mellows the exhaust note and makes it sound the same on both sides of the truck.

That bumper does look too low could you have the brackets on upside down?
Why have notches in the pan if the brackets are not even close to it?
I also never seen a plate between tail gate and bumper, another sign bumper is to low.

It is not the correct bumper for the truck. That looks to be a flareside rear bumper. The Styleside/Flushside rear bumper looks like below.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking about in front of the rear tire.

I bought the truck like this. I always wondered why the brackets didn't fit in the cut out in the pan. It had a hitch reciever bolted in, so I thought maybe the brackets were relocated for that.

I knew what the bumper was from as I have an 81 flare side with that bumper but it could have been some ones "custom touch"?

It just looked to low and as you pointed out the notches the brackets would tuck up into.

Now I do not know if the brackets are for your year truck or for the right bumper for your truck but they do look like the ones I have on my 81 flare side.

Before you go ditching, selling the bumper as they are hard to come by and the brackets even harder if for the later flare sides, get the right bumper and see if the brackets will work or maybe even try finding the right ones for your truck to match up.
If they are the same brackets you then have an extra set or if you check what years they fit like maybe the later flare sides, sell as a package deal.

As most bumpers like that have dimples where the bolts pulled the face of the bumper in.
Mine was like that but the PO also drilled holes in it for the lic. plate, there is a plate bracket that fits under the left side of the bed, and he also had a bumper hitch so more holes.
I welded all the holes closed and welded the bolts on the back side as my "custom touch"

Did the same for the front and added fog / driving lights. Just a test fit and why it is not straight.
