Just bought a 56 bigwindow, need some info

I just bought a 56 big window, long wheel base truck. It still has the 3 speed in it , but does not have a motor. It was a v8 truck. I don't know hardly anything about these trucks (don't flame me i usually drive chevys, but the truck was only $150) what motors will bolt up to this tranny?
Thanks
Andy

Chances are pretty good it had a 272 Y Block in it out of the factory. And virtually 100% it was something from the Y-block family-scroll down to the engine forum for these to see much more.

Put your VIN from the glovebox up here in this thread and you will get help decoding all the factory original delivery hardware

Now if that trans has already been swapped out, all this does not apply.

Welcome the the 48-60 Asylum ..I mean Forum!

First we have to figure out if this an original type setup. The original setup did not have the trans supported in the rear by a rear trans mount bolted to a tranny crossmember. Instead the tranny's only bolted to the bellhousing, which has a pair of mounting pads that bolt to that big crossmember right under the firewall.
Is this what you have? Or do you have a tranny sitting on a conventional rear tranny crossmember, without a bellhousing bolted to the crossmember under the firewall. If this is what you have, then I suppose it could be just about anything under the sun. At that point we could ID the tranny via casting numbers, tags, bolt patterns, dimensions, etc.

So, time for some more info...
Adios,
Brett
