I have a 2006 Ford Expedition that is having some trouble & I have taken it to a mechanic that a friend suggested (mostly b/c he's the only one in this small town) but I am not sure he is right about what is wrong w/ it b/c he went straight to something expensive & complicated. If I list the symptoms, would you PLEASE give me some advice on what it might/could be??? (These Steps happened in this exact order-like 1 new step/issue per week):
1)-Miles per Gallon started slowly going down
2)-Started w/ having to turn key twice to start (usually crank right up)
3)-Emissions System Light came on
4)-Started Idling Rough
5)-Started smoking a little out of tail pipe when first started
6)-Started smelling fuel when first started engine
I thought it was the EGR Valve (or Purge Valve as of 2006 models) b/c the symptoms were EXACT, so we bought a new one & paid someone to put it on but it did not change anything. I was then told it was the Spark Plugs that needed to be changed out & they were harder to change than usual ones b/c they are 3-point Spark Plugs. I stopped driving it except for occasionally in a 5 mile radius around town. It has 180,000 miles on it. ***ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED***

You might have better luck with some advice in the forum for other owners of similar vehicles - https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum27/
I bought a used 2005 F150 (similar engine) and ensured the spark plugs were already changed before I agreed to a price, as this can be expensive if the plugs decide to remain attached to the block instead of threading out nicely as they should.
Most parts stores can read the code that caused the Check Engine light to illuminate, and that may point towards the root cause,
Thank You so much for replying. I recently moved to a new town, so I do not really Know or TRUST anyone to work on my car without trying to take advantage of me by overcharging b/c I am a woman. I took it to this one mechanic who has now had it for over a week & after starting it one time said he thought it might be the Timing Chain-which I feel like is just a far leap. He has had it for a week now & I have not received 1 ph call from him. Thank you for the link, I will try to post in a different forum.
