I know this subject has been tossed around many times here (been reading a bunch of them) as well as a number of other locations on the net - yet stil no hard answer to the question at hand. Last weekend I bought a 1987 F-250 4x4, 7.5/auto that doesn't run - well it does if it was getting fuel. Since the truck is 100+ miles south of me, I bought it and dropped it at a local shop in Bremerton, WA. They dug in and conclude that the fuel selector valve is bad. As most probably know, the part is discontinued this is the 6 port, electro-mechanical valve. What I know:
E7TB-9F271-AA - Original Part number
F4TZ-9189-A - Original Number Supersedes to this number
E5TZ-9189-B - "Possibly" also supersedes above number but no confirmation
6C3Z-9189-A - This is a current part number, a very expensive one at that but it is supposed to supersede all the above numbers.
* Simple question - has anyone actually installed/used this current 6C3Z-9189-A part on their truck and KNOW it fits and works?
Well, I went ahead and ordered the 6C3Z-9189-A selector valve and can confirm without a doubt that it bolts on with no modifications and works as the original did before it died - the only difference between it and the original part is the color and I'm guessing about $400. List price on the part from Ford is $480 but from FordPartsWorld.com - $322. So with the new valve, inspection, troubleshooting, oil change and a battery from Costco I'm in for $1937 with a good running truck - only possible issues found are one wheel not spinning as freely as the other and one ball joint with some play.
You could have bypassed that valve and piped it to run off 1 tank to get it home where you could work on it or take it to someone you would trust but good to hear you got it taken care of.
Not a bad looking truck.

What I know: E7TB-9F271-AA - Original Part number This is not the part number, it's the ID engineering number marked on the part!
No part numbers marked on parts after 1956, just casting or ID engineering numbers, when applicable.
F4TZ-9189-A (replaced E9TZ-9189-A & E7TZ-9189-A) .. Fuel Tank Selector Valve - 6 ports / Marked: E7TB-9F271-AA or E9TB-9F271-AA / Replaced?
