In dire need of advice or suggestions...I have an 89 F250, w/460, 3 speed auto.
The issue first presented as not shifting into 3rd gear unless revved to 4k RPMs. This only last a day or so. Now it won't shift into 3rd at all. When in drive, from 1st to 2nd, it slips a little until warmed up. If i pull it down into 2nd gear, it shifts fine from 1st into 2nd. Yet, if placed in Drive, it will remain in 2nd regardless of RPMs. There was no warning, no other issues related to drive, no recent changes and no check engine light.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time.
Assuming you have a C6 transmission. Been a while. I think that one still has a rod from the throttle linkage to control pressures. Also thinking it has a vacuum modulator. Those things, shifter linkage and checking the fluid are for starts. I had a bolt fall out of a valve body on a chevy once, so there are other possibilities. You might try the transmission forum if nobody answers here.
If the gear selector is out of adjustment you might have it in 'D' gear but the trans is actually in '2' gear. Not a common problem on the older trucks but the mechanical linkage might be worn out.
Pull the vaccuum hose off of the vaccuum modulator and see if its worn. If fluid comes out when you take the hose off then it's time for a new one. Also, if your truck still does have the throttle kickdown linkage, make sure the brackets and all that jazz are connected properly. Mine was connected but the previous owner had it mounted backwards so it didn't shift either. Hope this helpsq
