I recently acquired a mostly-restored 1976 F150. One item not restored was the ancient AM radio and old dash speaker. I've already replaced the radio with an original Ford 1976 AM/FM unit that works fine ... but the speaker is shot. I'd like to go with door speakers, and I can see that the doors are set up for 5-1/4" rounds speakers. But the doors and the sides of the cowl have no openings for speaker wiring to pass through! This seems like an odd combination. Can anyone post pics of where the wiring holes should be and how large? Thanks.
Do a quick search for door wiring and you will probably get a hundred threads, many recent. That seems to be one of those "beat to death" topics.
Actually the original speakers were classified as 5.25" - usedtabe speakers were classified by the outer cone size and it was taken for granted that a 5.25" cone speaker needed a metal surround which was a tad larger so you could screw it into something. Somehow that has morphed over the years to refer to the screw placement and most current speakers are actually 4 .75" speakers with little "ears" added on to reach the holes. (Me, I think you could take a 2" tweeter and add the ears to call it a 5.25" speaker and it would still be a 2" tweeter, but I'm a curmudgeon.) Lot of larger 6"ish speakers have mounting holes which fit the old 5.25" pattern... hence the overlap. I just returned a set of Kicker speakers for just this reason...they also sounded like crap, which didn't help. Next up - new head unit and under-seat sub.
X2 on there are threads that have the exact answers and pics you need. Advanced search is the key. NOT the search box in the middle, but do you see the blue line with User CP, Albums, FAQ? See the SEARCH on that line?
It has a drop down search menu arrow, go to the "Advanced Search" option, top left side (search block) type in there what you are looking for and then go to the lower right column and highlight 73-79 forum. Select it and then you will have a detailed search just in the 73-79 forums.
Many thanks for these replies. I located the dimples and much appreciate the pictures of an installation. I should have searched because there are indeed a number of threads on this topic. This is an excellent forum that I will find very helpful as I finish the restoration.
