Hi guys, I have a 77 Highboy with a new fuel pump and fuel lines. Tank was steam cleaned and installed with new rubber lines and two fuel filters.
The truck does not start without me priming the carb. I watch the truck run and notice the fuel pump spurts fuel and barely fills the fuel filter near the carb. Is this a common problem? My 1976 highboy did not have this issue.
I was thinking of running an electric fuel pump. Any thoughts?
Thank you, just want to get the truck more reliable.
Generally a healthy fuel system and carb should start OK cold.
Any dent or older carbed vehicle may be prone to vapor lock when hot running today's gas. Usually when cold they start decently. An electric pump helps with hot vapor lock and may speed up cold starting... but should not be necessary to get her going cold.
I'd suggest check out your fuel system again. There should not be a filter on the suction side of the fuel pump... the sock on the fuel pickup is enough. May be a bad pump or vent problem as mentioned.
Thank you for your advice. I saw the truck has a provision on the frame to allow the fuel filter to sit on the suction side of the pump. I will try to remove that, and proceed. I will also add a choke, electric, but it clearly is inadequate fuel in the bowl, as I have to pour gas down the barrels and she fires up. The pump sucked good directly from my fuel can. My 76 Highboy never had this issue, so I will double check the system....it does not stall once running and driving....next issue to sort is my leaking cylinder on the power steering assist system....ouch!
You only talk about one tank but.........
Does the truck have dual tanks?
If so check the valve, they have been known to go bad after years of sitting.
Tank vent good?
Since the tank was just removed and re installed, did a line get crimped?
