Where can I buy a replacement fuel tank shield/skid plate? Mine is pretty rusty. I need to drop the tank to replace my rusted out hitch and dont think the shield will survive.
You might want to check around some parts yards, not sure if the skid plate would still be available from Ford or aftermarket.
Is your skid plate rusted out or just rusty? They are fairly thick. Mine was a little bubbled in a few spots around the louvers so I wire wheeled it and rattle canned it back to presentable.
When pulling the factory hitch off remember that they used a ton of thread locker on the frame bolts, heat will be your friend (as long as the tank is removed!) and a pipe wrench will make removing the round head frame bolts an easy job. What are you going to replace the original hitch with? I recently installed a Torklift SuperHitch, a little pricey but a crazy thick and strong high quality hitch.
Ask for Abe or Hass. Tell them you are on FTE and Mike sent you, OR you can meet me there sometime and I can get you into the yard to pick the parts yourself (and get a steep discount).
I'm heading to San Antonio for work next week. I'll try and stop by there either Monday on the way down or Friday on my way back. I haven't looked too closely. What tools might I need to just get the tank skid?
The fuel tank skid and shell are already removed on BOTH of the Excursions he has there. They are sitting next to the vehicles. Just go in there, pick one and drag it away. If you go Friday, I can probably meet you there and give you a hand. He closes at 6pm.

Any chance one of those skid plates are still around? I'm in northern VT near Canada and both my hitch and tank are rusted. The hitch was broken by my roommate using it to try and pull his tractor truck out of a snow bank. I just dropped the tank to get at all the rusty bolts. I had to get all new hardware from the stealership nearby. I'm not looking forward to dropping the tank again.
Does anyone have a picture or template/dimension of the v10 44-gallon skid plate?
Instead of looking for one to buy, I'm thinking of building one out of diamond plate.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Don't know if the other one is gone as aforementioned, but there is a wrecking yard here south of Houston in Pasadena that has 2 Excursions. I believe both have them, but it was last month when I was there...
