I'm shopping for carpet.

I'd prefer a rubber mat but I think I can't get one that fits. I'd like a product such as that used in the Ranger but it doesn't have to match the original, because it won't be. I want durability and a good fit. What should I look for?

Rangers used a hook and loop carpet. One possible source for the carpet is SMS Auto Fabrics. Not the only one by any stretch. Unless someone is cutting carpet to fit, you might have to do the cutting.

I was considering these products, Chad.
65-72 Ford Full Size Truck, Standard Cab Carpet 2 WD 4 Speed, With Gas Tank In Cab 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972
Which would you choose, if any?

The 80/20 loop is the most stock appearing, but since that's not a concern in this case I'd probably go with the 80/20 loop. Ha!

Thanks. I thought so too. What did you put under yours? I've got aluminum-backed asphaltic insulation on there now.

Went with the alum. backed jute then secured to the floor using aluminum tape, this was many years ago and still remains secure.

Went cyber shopping and requested samples from couple supplier's. Selected the color and type carpet, took this info to upholstery shop to find they went thru the same supplier, they ordered the carpet and applied their discount to my total cost.

I have FatMat's floor liner that will be layed down underneath.

not to take away from the thread but does anyone have suggestions on how to work around the floor shifter with the carpet? I was thinking of just laying the carpet down then shifter on top of the carpet but then what if I need to remove the carpet for any reason(don't think I will) then I would have to uninstall the shifter.

red66rider - I just cut my carpet close to the shifter, then put the OE boot over it and screwed it down with some stainless steel sheet metal screws so it would look nice and hopefully for a long time. I tried to find a round "finish" bezel to go over the boot, like on Mustangs, Falcons, Galaxies, etc. but I could never find one big enough.

Well I see in your original post you said "I'd prefer a rubber mat but I think I can't get one that fits" Have you tried the MIP vinyl floor coverings?

Ford - Ford Pickup Truck Vinyl Flooring - Regular Cab - Black Vinyl - Macs Auto Parts

It goes from the firewall all the way to the back, was molded well... a few blemishes but okay and man is it thick! I just liked that it will go all the way back to protect the whole floor. I just finished installing mine, it is oversized so you have to cut it down for a good fit!

Does anyone know what the actual difference is, between carpets, for with in cab tanks and those without?

The style of carpets is loop style which is factory. I got the plush I believe which is in the newer style of vehicles today. Get the mass backing which insulates and cuts down on sound. Molded carpet with minimal cutting up at the trans hump meets the firewall. The one with no tank goes up the rear wall only 6". I will try to post pics later. I put mine in a 72 I have.

Thanks for the invitation, Jeff.
Cory, did you have to heat the mat to get it to conform to the contours?

The shop used a large hot glue type spray applicator, applied in small sections over the alum/jute, worked the carpet in place by hand and used small carpet rollers to set carpet in place. Pleased with results. Purchased from SWS and there was an excess of approx. 9" from the floor to the front side of the fuel tank. This was over 12 years ago, other than needing a cleaning seems to be holding up well??

Well, its funny, It says to leave it in the sun and let it relax before doing it. Well as time permitted, it wasn't until winter before my cab was ready. I installed it on a 25 deg day in my cover-it. It went in well considering the temperature. I did use a heat gun for a couple of the stubborn areas, but it went in well. My truck originally came with the rubber mat, and I knew I didn't want carpet, because I know how hard it is to keep nice.
